The Gastein radon-thermal water
The thermal water – our central spa therapy – is weakly mineralised and enriched with natural radon. Tests have show that precipitation water at an altitude of about 1,800 metres seeps to a depth of 2,000 metres, heats up at that depth and again rises to the surface at an altitude of about 1,000 metres – from 16 different springs and at a volume of five million litres per day.
What is radon and how does this radioactive substance work?
Mild, natural radioactivity is thoroughly positive for the body when taken as a part of a cure. The radon inert gas escapes from the thermal water and enters the body through the respiratory tract and the skin. It unfolds its healing effect there before it completely disintegrates after about three hours. The defence mechanism in the organism is stimulated and the natural warmth fosters circulation.
Healing success is enhanced by the altitude of the Gastein spa region. Our organism adapts to the height, more red blood corpuscles are produced and the capacity of providing the tissue with oxygen in increased.

Radon thermal-water therapies
Radon thermal bath
The radon thermal bath is our most important and basic spa therapy. The special baths are filled with about 480 litres of thermal water. The bath temperature is 36 to 39 degrees Celsius, duration of the bath is 15-22 minutes. Radon content (water from the Elisabeth Spring in Bad Gastein): 52nCi/L
Overheating of the body takes place in the thermal water and thus stimulates the metabolism process. The radon released in the thermal water is taken into the body via the skin and the respiratory tract and releases the body’s own pain-killing substances.
The vegetative nervous system is brought into rhythm through regular baths.
Radon thermal underwater therapy
One of the most important spa therapies to counteract problems of the spinal column and joints is underwater therapy. Through the friction of warm water the body becomes light, almost weightless. The pain-alleviating effect of warmth and radon is added for better training of the muscles and joints. Individual motoric exercises take place under the observation of a physiotherapist – as required, with a pressure-jet-hose massage or treatment with a Glisson’s sling. Water temperature: 34-36°C. Therapy duration: 25 minutes.
Areas of use
- Degenerative, rheumatic diseases of the spinal column and joints
- Postoperative conditions with hindered mobility and muscle weakening
- Neurological illnesses with spastic acinetic- and coordination disturbances
